Cubs Night Adventure
Cub section recently enjoyed a night hike experience. Starting close to Broomfield Hospital we walked across the fields towards the gravel pit at Border Woods. Stopping to enjoy the view we ate our snacks watching the moonlight glitter on the water. Back on the trail we walked through the woods with torches off acclimatising our eyes to the darkness and listening for the night creatures. A short stop and a ghost story from Joseph and we were out and skirting the woods towards Larks Lane.
Stopping and staying silent Cubs enjoyed a close encounter with Bats as they flew the length of the path at head height!! We eventually arrived at the Walthams Scout Hut, and a huge thank you to the group for use of their hut.
Once settled we enjoyed hearing about a Duke of Edinburgh award expedition before tucking into a midnight snack of Hot Dogs, Crisps, and Chocolate biscuits!!
A few games later and cubs were flagging so out with the sleeping bags and by 01:30 everyone was asleep much to the surprise of Akela and Bagheera who really didn’t know what to do with themselves.
A good sleep by all and we were up with the crack of dawn for breakfast followed by games before heading home.
Thanks to all the leaders and parents who supported and to Chris McCann our District Leader for his support.
A follow up letter from Chris warmed our hearts:
Just a short note to thank you for a lovely and entertaining Night hike with 19 of your cubs. The hike was timed to the minute, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, even those brave enough to peer over the precipice.
A real mixture of danger and excitement to talk about at school. Andy and yourself clearly had recited the route as safety at every bridge and road was catered for.
You clearly have a good mix of leaders and parents all of which is makes life easier on an event like this.
Thank you again for inviting me and for an evening that went so well.
